{"id":202413,"date":"2025-10-21T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hillfoothealth.nhs.uk\/?p=202413"},"modified":"2025-10-21T09:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T08:00:00","slug":"cheshire-and-merseyside-gps-scoop-awards-for-addressing-inequalities-in-end-of-life-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hillfoothealth.nhs.uk\/?p=202413","title":{"rendered":"Cheshire and Merseyside GPs scoop awards for addressing inequalities in end-of-life care"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"damfeeds_content_27793\" class=\"damfeeds_content\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"eager\" src=\"https:\/\/analytics.damibu.com\/1x1.png?a=2BFCAFA4081F8AF509432E6C99F72835&amp;l=AD6FB2155E23F04B5527E8437157FAB3&amp;f=08B43047B7D85218D3DC7AEC6A631B93&amp;t=0215EE81691BA2A4A7AA2AFF0050EFEAEEDD1E1F0572D4EBCF1F422DE9B42937F15F9561D6BECD357B5EA43C3C68C8DB50F11361B192D7982DD1C8BCFBD521875F11C23D5EB4969EA50DF5748B8BFFF6F3E4B33E18379D7C87746DF74EFE501F\" width=\"0\" height=\"0\" class=\"damibu-display-none\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"element\">\n<div class=\"element-inner\">\n<div class=\"rte-content\">\n<p>Three local GPs are celebrating after bringing home accolades at the recent Daffodil Standard Awards, recognising their outstanding contribution to best practice in end-of-life care.<\/p>\n<p>The third annual Daffodil Standards Awards took place at the RCGP Annual Conference in Newport, Wales, earlier this month, with NHS Cheshire and Merseyside\u2019s Dr Jonathan Griffiths and Dr Bryony Kendall jointly winning the \u2018Addressing Inequalities in End of Life\u2019 award alongside the Brownlow Health Homeless Palliative Team.<\/p>\n<p>The Daffodil Standards Awards \u2013 a joint project between the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and the UK&#8217;s leading end of life charity Marie Curie \u2013 is a recognition and celebration of exceptional end-of-life care delivered by practices, GPs and their teams.<\/p>\n<p>Nominees and winners are selected based on their implementation&nbsp;of the principles of&nbsp;<a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mariecurie.org.uk\/professionals\/daffodil-standards\/general-practitioners\" target=\"_blank\">The Daffodil Standards<\/a>. There are a set of voluntary quality improvement standards developed by Marie Curie and the RCGP to support better, more consistent end of life care across general practice. To date, more than 2,100 practices across the UK have signed up to the Standards.<\/p>\n<p>In adjudication, the judges were particularly impressed by Dr Griffiths&#8217; and Dr Kendall\u2019s innovative framework for practitioners which helps support bereaved families following the death of a child, calling it \u201cincredibly moving and innovative\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"element\">\n<div class=\"element-inner\">\n<div class=\"rte-content\">\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"element\">\n<div class=\"element-inner\">\n<div class=\"rte-content\">\n<p>Dr Griffiths and Dr Kendall&nbsp;<a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cheshireandmerseyside.nhs.uk\/posts\/cheshire-gp-shares-insights-on-child-bereavement-in-powerful-new-podcast\/\" target=\"_blank\">recently featured in a powerful podcast<\/a> exploring how GPs can support families through the devastating loss of a child.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Jonathan Griffiths, GP and Associate Medical Director, Primary Care, NHS Cheshire and Merseyside, said:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"element\">\n<div class=\"element-inner\">\n<div class=\"nhsuk-inset-text\"><span class=\"nhsuk-u-visually-hidden\">Information:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe \u2018When A Child Dies\u2019 framework is designed to help General Practice support those suffering bereavement because of the death of a child. It is a much-needed resource with practical advice and a wealth of suggestions about how to approach parental bereavement. We hope it will give confidence to practice teams to reach out and care with empathy and understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"element\">\n<div class=\"element-inner\">\n<div class=\"rte-content\">\n<p>The Brownlow Health Homeless Palliative Team were praised by the judges for their \u201cgroundbreaking\u201d model of proactive, inclusive care which was deemed an \u201cinspiring example of inclusion health in action\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Ryan Young, GP at Brownlow Health, said:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"element\">\n<div class=\"element-inner\">\n<div class=\"nhsuk-inset-text\"><span class=\"nhsuk-u-visually-hidden\">Information:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Brownlow Health Homeless Palliative Team provide care to some of the most marginalised people in our society. We recognised that people experiencing homelessness were not having \u2018good\u2019 deaths. They often had limited palliative care and were dying in places they didn\u2019t want to die in. We\u2019ve been able to provide support to ensure that they access the palliative care they need and, ultimately, enable them to die with dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"element\">\n<div class=\"element-inner\">\n<div class=\"rte-content\">\n<p>Siwan Seaman, Medical Director at Marie Curie\u2019s Cardiff and the Vale hospice, said:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"element\">\n<div class=\"element-inner\">\n<div class=\"nhsuk-inset-text\"><span class=\"nhsuk-u-visually-hidden\">Information:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been working closely with the RCGP for over ten years now, and I am very pleased to see our partnership continuing to be celebrated through the Daffodil Standards Awards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis cross-community initiative promotes quality improvements in General Practice with a patient focused approach that will support better outcomes in palliative and end of life care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are the only awards within the sector that recognise the contributions of the entire practice team and celebrate the importance of a compassionate and targeted approach at every stage of the end of life experience.
